In dieser Studie wurden ~ 36.000 Melanompatienten mit ~ 375.000 gesunden Personen europ\u00e4ischer Abstammung verglichen und 68 genetische Varianten in 54 verschiedenen Genomregionen identifiziert. Die Studie fand auch Zusammenh\u00e4nge zwischen Krebsrisiko und hellerer Hautfarbe sowie einer gr\u00f6\u00dferen Anzahl von Muttermalen am K\u00f6rper. Eine der Regionen, die sowohl mit Melanomen als auch mit Muttermalen assoziiert sind, befindet sich in der N\u00e4he des PARP1-Gens, eines DNA-Reparaturgens, das bei der Kontrolle des Melanom-verursachenden Gens MITF hilft. Eine andere Variante war mit der HLA-Region assoziiert, was auf eine Rolle der Immunit\u00e4t bei der Entwicklung von Hautkrebs hindeutet. Andere Gene waren an der Aufrechterhaltung der Telomere beteiligt.
