Einige Lebensmittel, wie Fr\u00fcchte, enthalten nat\u00fcrlichen Zucker. Andererseits werden Zucker \u00fcblicherweise auch Lebensmitteln wie Geb\u00e4ck und alkoholfreien Getr\u00e4nken zugesetzt. Der durchschnittliche Amerikaner verbraucht 22 Teel\u00f6ffel (88 Gramm) Zucker pro Tag, w\u00e4hrend Ern\u00e4hrungswissenschaftler nicht mehr als 9 Teel\u00f6ffel (36 Gramm) pro Tag empfehlen. Zu viel Zucker in der Nahrung kann zu einem erh\u00f6hten Risiko f\u00fcr Diabetes, Karies und andere Krankheiten f\u00fchren. Um genetische Varianten zu identifizieren, die die Zuckermenge beeinflussen k\u00f6nnen, die ein Individuum konsumiert, untersuchte diese Studie das Genom von \u00fcber 260.000 Individuen europ\u00e4ischer Abstammung. Die Studie fand 10 genetische Varianten im Zusammenhang mit dem Zuckerkonsum. Einige dieser Varianten waren auch mit dem Verbrauch anderer Makron\u00e4hrstoffe wie Fette und Proteine verbunden. Interessanterweise ergab die Studie, dass ein erh\u00f6hter Zuckerkonsum mit einer Abnahme des Taillenumfangs und einer Zunahme der k\u00f6rperlichen Aktivit\u00e4t korrelierte.
