Insbesondere sind Proteine molekulare Maschinen, die viele Funktionen innerhalb und au\u00dferhalb von Zellen erf\u00fcllen. Proteine werden aus 20 Bausteinen hergestellt, die als Aminos\u00e4uren bekannt sind. W\u00e4hrend unser K\u00f6rper 11 von 20 Aminos\u00e4uren produzieren kann, m\u00fcssen die restlichen 9 durch die Nahrung, die wir essen, konsumiert werden. Im Durchschnitt konsumieren Personen ungef\u00e4hr 7 Gramm Protein pro 20 Pfund K\u00f6rpergewicht pro Tag. W\u00e4hrend Protein essentiell ist, kann \u00fcberm\u00e4\u00dfiger Proteinverbrauch zu Stoffwechselst\u00f6rungen wie Fettleibigkeit und Diabetes f\u00fchren. Um genetische Varianten zu identifizieren, die die Menge an Protein beeinflussen k\u00f6nnen, die ein Individuum konsumiert, untersuchte diese genomweite Assoziationsstudie die Genome von \u00fcber 260.000 Individuen europ\u00e4ischer Abstammung. Die Studie identifizierte 7 genetische Varianten, die mit dem Proteinkonsum assoziiert sind. Es wurde festgestellt, dass die genetische Veranlagung f\u00fcr einen h\u00f6heren Proteinkonsum mit Fettleibigkeit, Typ-2-Diabetes, Herzerkrankungen und Body-Mass-Index (BMI) korreliert.
