Die Schilddr\u00fcse selbst wird von der Hypophyse gesteuert, die sich im Gehirn befindet, und setzt das Schilddr\u00fcsen-stimulierende Hormon (TSH) frei, das die Schilddr\u00fcse zum Handeln anspornt. TSH-Spiegel werden \u00fcblicherweise verwendet, um eine Vielzahl von Schilddr\u00fcsenerkrankungen zu diagnostizieren, einschlie\u00dflich Hypothyreose, Hyperthyreose und Schilddr\u00fcsenkrebs.
