Typische Symptome sind Sch\u00fcttelfrost, hohes Fieber und in schweren F\u00e4llen Organversagen. Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation sch\u00e4tzte 2017 219 Millionen Malariaf\u00e4lle, wobei die Zahl der Todesf\u00e4lle auf 435.000 gesch\u00e4tzt wurde. In dieser Studie wurde versucht, genomische Regionen zu identifizieren, die mit einer Resistenz gegen schwere Malaria assoziiert sind. Mithilfe von DNA von \u00fcber 17.000 Personen aus Afrika, Asien und Ozeanien identifizierten die Forscher 5 genetische Varianten. Zusammen erkl\u00e4ren diese Varianten ungef\u00e4hr 10% der Heritabilit\u00e4t der Resistenz gegen schwere Malaria.
