Es wird im Allgemeinen durch die Bildung von Plaque (aus Fetten, Cholesterin oder anderen Substanzen) in den Arterien verursacht und kann zu einem Herzinfarkt oder Schlaganfall f\u00fchren. Es ist bekannt, dass eine Veranlagung f\u00fcr periphere Arterienerkrankungen durch die Genetik beeinflusst wird, es wurden jedoch nur wenige Varianten identifiziert. Diese Studie suchte nach genetischen Varianten, die das PAD-Risiko bei 243.060 Milit\u00e4rveteranen europ\u00e4ischer, afrikanischer und hispanischer Abstammung erh\u00f6hen. Viele der identifizierten Varianten waren auch mit h\u00f6heren Blutspiegeln von LDL-Cholesterin (Low Density Lipoprotein) assoziiert.
