Normalerweise wandert Harns\u00e4ure durch das Blut, bis sie von den Nieren herausgefiltert wird und schlie\u00dflich im Urin ausgeschieden wird. Wenn der K\u00f6rper Harns\u00e4ure nicht effizient verarbeitet, kann sie sich in Gelenken und Nieren ansammeln und Gicht und Nierensteine verursachen. Es ist bekannt, dass das Risiko einer Person, Harns\u00e4ure anzusammeln, vererbbar ist, es wurden jedoch nur wenige genetische Loci gefunden. Diese genomweite Assoziationsstudie untersuchte \u00fcber 450.000 Personen afroamerikanischer, ostasiatischer, europ\u00e4ischer, hispanischer und s\u00fcdasiatischer Abstammung.
