Der mittlere Teil der Netzhaut ist als Makula bekannt. Es erm\u00f6glicht uns, in hochaufl\u00f6senden Farben zu sehen und wahrzunehmen. Die Degeneration der Makula ist eine der Hauptursachen f\u00fcr Sehverlust bei \u00e4lteren Menschen und betrifft weltweit fast 160 Millionen Menschen. In dieser genomweiten Assoziationsstudie wurde versucht, genetische Varianten zu identifizieren, die mit dem Risiko einer Person korrelieren, diese altersbedingte Makuladegeneration zu entwickeln, indem das Genom von \u00fcber 40.000 Personen europ\u00e4ischer Abstammung untersucht wurde. Die Studie fand 34 genetische Loci, von denen 16 neu sind und mit altersbedingter Makuladegeneration assoziiert sind. Einige der beteiligten Gene spielen eine Rolle bei der Bildung einer extrazellul\u00e4ren Matrix, die die Augen und andere Organe einbettet.
