Die Sequenzen an den Enden der Chromosomen bilden Kappen, die als Telomere bekannt sind. Diese Strukturen tragen zum Schutz unserer Chromosomen bei, \u00e4hnlich wie die Plastikspitzen an den Schn\u00fcrsenkeln die Enden vor dem Ausfransen sch\u00fctzen. Bei vielen Zellteilungen, bei denen die gesamte DNA einer Zelle kopiert wird, werden die Telomere zunehmend k\u00fcrzer, bis die DNA besch\u00e4digt wird und die Zellen schlie\u00dflich sterben. Es wird gesch\u00e4tzt, dass bis zu 80% der Telomerl\u00e4nge eines Individuums vererbbar sind. Kurze Telomere wurden mit einem erh\u00f6hten Risiko f\u00fcr mehrere altersbedingte Krankheiten in Verbindung gebracht. Die Telomerl\u00e4nge wurde auch mit Krebs in Verbindung gebracht, aber die Wirkungsrichtung dieser Assoziation ist weniger klar. Diese Studie untersuchte genetische Daten von fast 50.000 Personen europ\u00e4ischer Abstammung und identifizierte 7 genetische Regionen, die mit der Telomerl\u00e4nge assoziiert sind, von denen 5 neu sind.
