Consta de 4 c\u00e1maras: 2 aur\u00edculas (izquierda y derecha) y 2 ventr\u00edculos (izquierda y derecha). La sangre que se ha enriquecido con ox\u00edgeno en los pulmones ingresa a la aur\u00edcula izquierda y luego fluye hacia el ventr\u00edculo izquierdo desde donde se bombea a todas las dem\u00e1s partes del cuerpo. El volumen telediast\u00f3lico del ventr\u00edculo izquierdo (LVEDV) es el volumen de sangre en un ventr\u00edculo izquierdo relajado justo antes de que se contraiga y bombee sangre al cuerpo. El LVEDV promedio es de 120 ml para las mujeres y 150 ml para los hombres y se puede usar como una medida de la salud del coraz\u00f3n. Este estudio de asociaci\u00f3n de todo el genoma examin\u00f3 los genomas de 36.000 individuos de ascendencia europea para comprender mejor la base gen\u00e9tica del LVEDV.
