Este estudio compar\u00f3 ~ 36,000 pacientes con melanoma con ~ 375,000 individuos sanos de ascendencia europea e identific\u00f3 68 variantes gen\u00e9ticas en 54 regiones gen\u00f3micas diferentes. El estudio tambi\u00e9n encontr\u00f3 asociaciones entre el riesgo de c\u00e1ncer y un color de piel m\u00e1s claro, as\u00ed como una mayor cantidad de lunares en el cuerpo. Una de las regiones asociadas con el melanoma y los lunares est\u00e1 cerca del gen PARP1, un gen de reparaci\u00f3n del ADN que ayuda a controlar el gen MITF que causa el melanoma. Otra variante se asoci\u00f3 con la regi\u00f3n HLA, lo que sugiere un papel de la inmunidad en el desarrollo del c\u00e1ncer de piel.
