Consta de 4 c\u00e1maras: 2 aur\u00edculas (izquierda y derecha) y 2 ventr\u00edculos (izquierda y derecha). La sangre que se ha enriquecido con ox\u00edgeno en los pulmones ingresa a la aur\u00edcula izquierda y luego fluye hacia el ventr\u00edculo izquierdo desde donde se bombea a todas las dem\u00e1s partes del cuerpo. El volumen telesist\u00f3lico del ventr\u00edculo izquierdo (LVESV) es el volumen de sangre que permanece en el ventr\u00edculo izquierdo al final de una bomba. El LVESV promedio es de 41 ml para las mujeres y 58 ml para los hombres y se puede usar como una medida de la salud del coraz\u00f3n. Este estudio de asociaci\u00f3n de todo el genoma examin\u00f3 los genomas de 36.000 individuos de ascendencia europea para comprender mejor la base gen\u00e9tica del LVESV.
