Los accidentes cerebrovasculares ocurren cuando una gran parte del cerebro ya no recibe sangre debido a un co\u00e1gulo importante o una hemorragia; esto conduce a un da\u00f1o cerebral obvio. Sin embargo, los co\u00e1gulos o hemorragias m\u00e1s peque\u00f1os pueden matar o da\u00f1ar las c\u00e9lulas cerebrales, lo que posiblemente cause demencia o problemas de movimiento. Al observar los esc\u00e1neres cerebrales de m\u00e1s de 26.000 personas, los autores identificaron 11 regiones gen\u00f3micas asociadas con hiperintensidades de materia blanca periventricular.
