Sin embargo, a veces el sistema inmunol\u00f3gico de una persona puede atacar las propias c\u00e9lulas del cuerpo y provocar una enfermedad autoinmune. Cuando el sistema inmunol\u00f3gico ataca y destruye la gl\u00e1ndula tiroides, un \u00f3rgano del cuello que produce hormonas y tiene forma de pajarita, puede ralentizar los latidos del coraz\u00f3n, provocar aumento de peso y provocar una sensaci\u00f3n de fr\u00edo, cansancio y depresi\u00f3n. Este estudio examin\u00f3 los datos gen\u00e9ticos de m\u00e1s de 30.000 pacientes con enfermedad tiroidea autoinmune y m\u00e1s de 700.000 controles sanos (ascendencia europea) y descubri\u00f3 99 variantes gen\u00e9ticas, 84 de las cuales son nuevas, que est\u00e1n asociadas con la enfermedad tiroidea autoinmune. Una de las variantes descubiertas reduce la producci\u00f3n del receptor FLT3.
