A\u00f1os de desgaste pueden afectar sus rodillas y causar dolor de rodilla. De hecho, ~ 50% de las personas mayores de 50 a\u00f1os experimentan esta afecci\u00f3n. Para comprender mejor la base gen\u00e9tica del dolor de rodilla, los investigadores llevaron a cabo un estudio de asociaci\u00f3n de todo el genoma que examin\u00f3 los genomas de m\u00e1s de 170.000 individuos de ascendencia europea. El estudio identific\u00f3 2 variantes gen\u00e9ticas asociadas con el dolor de rodilla. De estas variantes gen\u00e9ticas, una se encuentra cerca de un gen previamente implicado en la osteoartritis. La osteoartritis es el desgaste del tejido protector flexible conocido como cart\u00edlago en los extremos de los huesos. La fabella es un hueso diminuto ubicado detr\u00e1s de la rodilla que en su mayor\u00eda desapareci\u00f3 durante la evoluci\u00f3n de los humanos, pero que todav\u00eda se encuentra en algunos individuos.
