Si bien no son cancerosos, eventualmente pueden causar un bloqueo del pasaje nasal que conduce a problemas respiratorios y p\u00e9rdida del olfato. En el momento de la publicaci\u00f3n de este estudio, no se conoc\u00edan factores de riesgo gen\u00e9ticos para p\u00f3lipos nasales. Este estudio examin\u00f3 los genomas de m\u00e1s de 700.000 individuos de ascendencia europea y descubri\u00f3 10 variantes gen\u00e9ticas, muchas cerca de genes que desempe\u00f1an un papel en la inflamaci\u00f3n. Anteriormente se inform\u00f3 que la inflamaci\u00f3n nasal cr\u00f3nica aumenta el riesgo de desarrollar p\u00f3lipos nasales.
