Si bien todas las c\u00e9lulas necesitan hierro, la mayor parte del hierro del cuerpo lo utilizan los gl\u00f3bulos rojos, donde facilita el transporte de ox\u00edgeno. Si bien los niveles bajos de hierro pueden provocar enfermedades, los niveles elevados de hierro tambi\u00e9n son peligrosos. La hemocromatosis es una enfermedad caracterizada por niveles elevados de hierro y da\u00f1o al h\u00edgado y al coraz\u00f3n. Se sabe que los niveles de hierro corporal son un rasgo hereditario. Hasta un 30% de la variaci\u00f3n entre individuos puede explicarse por la gen\u00e9tica. Este estudio de asociaci\u00f3n de todo el genoma examin\u00f3 a casi 50.000 personas de ascendencia europea para identificar marcadores asociados con los niveles de hierro en sangre. El estudio encontr\u00f3 6 regiones gen\u00e9ticas que est\u00e1n relacionadas con los niveles de hierro en la sangre.
