La insulina, una hormona producida por el p\u00e1ncreas, ayuda a las c\u00e9lulas del cuerpo a ingerir glucosa de la sangre y utilizarla como fuente de energ\u00eda. La diabetes tipo 2 (T2D) ocurre cuando el p\u00e1ncreas no produce suficiente insulina o las c\u00e9lulas del cuerpo no responden a la insulina. Esto da como resultado niveles altos de az\u00facar en sangre que pueden da\u00f1ar los nervios, los vasos sangu\u00edneos, los ri\u00f1ones y otros \u00f3rganos. Si bien los factores ambientales, en particular la dieta, son factores de riesgo para la diabetes tipo 2, tambi\u00e9n se puede heredar una susceptibilidad.
