Ayuda a mantener huesos fuertes, dientes sanos y tambi\u00e9n puede proteger contra una variedad de enfermedades como la diabetes tipo 1. Si bien la vitamina D no est\u00e1 presente en muchos alimentos que comemos, nuestros cuerpos la producen naturalmente en respuesta a la exposici\u00f3n al sol. Esto es lo que le da a la vitamina D el sobrenombre de \u201cvitamina del sol\u201d. La vitamina D producida es procesada adicionalmente por el cuerpo en una serie de reacciones qu\u00edmicas. Una de estas reacciones convierte la vitamina D en 25-hidroxivitamina D (25OHD), un indicador com\u00fanmente medido de los niveles de vitamina D en el cuerpo. Este estudio de asociaci\u00f3n de todo el genoma examin\u00f3 a m\u00e1s de 417.000 individuos de ascendencia europea para identificar variantes gen\u00e9ticas relacionadas con los niveles de 25OHD.
