Se define para comenzar 1 a\u00f1o despu\u00e9s de que la menstruaci\u00f3n haya cesado. Para encontrar variantes gen\u00e9ticas que se correlacionen con la edad a la que se detienen los ciclos menstruales de las mujeres, este estudio examin\u00f3 a 38,968 mujeres de ascendencia europea. El rango de edad normal de la menopausia utilizado en este estudio fue de 45 a 54, por lo que la condici\u00f3n antes de los 45 se consider\u00f3 temprana y despu\u00e9s de los 54 se consider\u00f3 tard\u00eda. Las variantes gen\u00e9ticas identificadas en este estudio explicaron menos del 1,5% de la heredabilidad. Muchas de las variantes gen\u00e9ticas asociadas con el momento de la menopausia estaban relacionadas con la reparaci\u00f3n del ADN y la funci\u00f3n inmunol\u00f3gica.
