No presenta los primeros s\u00edntomas (aura) que tienen otros tipos de migra\u00f1as, como mareos, picaz\u00f3n en la piel o debilidad. Parecen ser hereditarios, pero se han descubierto pocas variantes gen\u00e9ticas. Este estudio identific\u00f3 varias variantes gen\u00e9ticas asociadas con esta afecci\u00f3n en 6.906 individuos alemanes y holandeses, las m\u00e1s significativas de las cuales estaban en los genes MEF2D, PHACTR1 y ASTN2, as\u00ed como en una cercana al gen TGFBR2. MEF2D se expresa en gran medida en el cerebro y ayuda a las neuronas a formar y enviar se\u00f1ales. PHACTR1 juega un papel en la actividad sin\u00e1ptica (las sinapsis permiten que las neuronas pasen se\u00f1ales a otras c\u00e9lulas). El producto del gen ASTN2 ayuda a las neuronas a moverse guiadas por las c\u00e9lulas gliales, que son c\u00e9lulas que rodean a las neuronas y brindan apoyo.
