Normalmente, el \u00e1cido \u00farico viaja a trav\u00e9s de la sangre hasta que es filtrado por los ri\u00f1ones y finalmente se excreta en la orina. Cuando el cuerpo no procesa de manera eficiente el \u00e1cido \u00farico, puede acumularse en las articulaciones y los ri\u00f1ones causando gota y c\u00e1lculos renales. Se sabe que el riesgo de acumulaci\u00f3n de \u00e1cido \u00farico de una persona es hereditario, pero se han encontrado pocos loci gen\u00e9ticos. Este estudio de asociaci\u00f3n de todo el genoma examin\u00f3 a m\u00e1s de 450.000 individuos de ascendencia afroamericana, asi\u00e1tica oriental, europea, hispana y del sur de Asia.
