Se desarrolla cuando el nervio \u00f3ptico que conecta el ojo con el cerebro se da\u00f1a, a menudo como resultado del aumento de la presi\u00f3n dentro del ojo. Un m\u00e9todo para detener la progresi\u00f3n del glaucoma es disminuir esa presi\u00f3n. Este estudio de asociaci\u00f3n de todo el genoma de m\u00e1s de 130.000 participantes de ascendencia europea identific\u00f3 24 variantes gen\u00e9ticas asociadas con un aumento de la presi\u00f3n intraocular y el riesgo de desarrollar esta afecci\u00f3n. Los ex\u00e1menes oculares regulares pueden detectar un aumento de la presi\u00f3n intraocular antes de que la visi\u00f3n se vea afectada.
