Las secuencias en los extremos de los cromosomas forman tapas conocidas como tel\u00f3meros. Estas estructuras ayudan a proteger nuestros cromosomas de la misma forma que las puntas de pl\u00e1stico de los cordones protegen los extremos del deshilachado. En muchas divisiones celulares, durante las cuales se copia todo el ADN de una c\u00e9lula, los tel\u00f3meros se acortan progresivamente hasta que el ADN se da\u00f1a y las c\u00e9lulas finalmente mueren. Se estima que hasta el 80% de la longitud de los tel\u00f3meros de un individuo es heredable. Los tel\u00f3meros cortos se han relacionado con un mayor riesgo de varias enfermedades relacionadas con la edad. La longitud de los tel\u00f3meros tambi\u00e9n se ha relacionado con el c\u00e1ncer, pero la direccionalidad del efecto de esta asociaci\u00f3n es menos clara. Este estudio examin\u00f3 datos gen\u00e9ticos de casi 50.000 individuos de ascendencia europea e identific\u00f3 7 regiones gen\u00e9ticas asociadas con la longitud de los tel\u00f3meros, 5 de las cuales son nuevas.
