Il est d\u00e9fini comme commen\u00e7ant 1 an apr\u00e8s la fin des r\u00e8gles d&rsquo;une femme. Pour trouver des variantes g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques en corr\u00e9lation avec l&rsquo;\u00e2ge auquel les cycles menstruels des femmes s&rsquo;arr\u00eatent, cette \u00e9tude a examin\u00e9 38 968 femmes d&rsquo;origine europ\u00e9enne. La tranche d&rsquo;\u00e2ge normale de la m\u00e9nopause utilis\u00e9e dans cette \u00e9tude \u00e9tait de 45 \u00e0 54 ans, de sorte que la condition avant 45 ans \u00e9tait consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme pr\u00e9coce et apr\u00e8s 54 ans \u00e9tait consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme tardive. Les variantes g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques identifi\u00e9es dans cette \u00e9tude expliquent moins de 1,5% de l&rsquo;h\u00e9ritabilit\u00e9. De nombreuses variantes g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques associ\u00e9es au moment de la m\u00e9nopause \u00e9taient li\u00e9es \u00e0 la r\u00e9paration de l&rsquo;ADN et \u00e0 la fonction immunitaire. De plus, le dysfonctionnement mitochondrial \u00e9tait li\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e2ge de la m\u00e9nopause. Les mitochondries sont commun\u00e9ment appel\u00e9es la \u00abcentrale \u00e9lectrique de la cellule\u00bb &#8211; c&rsquo;est l\u00e0 que la plus grande partie de l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie chimique de nos cellules est produite.
