La partie centrale de la r\u00e9tine est connue sous le nom de macula. Cela nous permet de voir en haute r\u00e9solution et de percevoir les couleurs. La d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9rescence de la macula est l&rsquo;une des principales causes de perte de vision chez les personnes \u00e2g\u00e9es, touchant pr\u00e8s de 160 millions de personnes dans le monde. Cette \u00e9tude d&rsquo;association \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9chelle du g\u00e9nome a tent\u00e9 d&rsquo;identifier des variantes g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques en corr\u00e9lation avec le risque d&rsquo;une personne de d\u00e9velopper cette d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9rescence maculaire li\u00e9e \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e2ge en examinant les g\u00e9nomes de plus de 40 000 personnes d&rsquo;ascendance europ\u00e9enne. L&rsquo;\u00e9tude a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 34 locus g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques, dont 16 nouveaux, associ\u00e9s \u00e0 la d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9rescence maculaire li\u00e9e \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e2ge. Certains des g\u00e8nes impliqu\u00e9s jouent un r\u00f4le dans la formation de la matrice extracellulaire, qui englobe les yeux et d&rsquo;autres organes.
