Les s\u00e9quences aux extr\u00e9mit\u00e9s des chromosomes forment des coiffes appel\u00e9es t\u00e9lom\u00e8res. Ces structures aident \u00e0 prot\u00e9ger nos chromosomes, tout comme les pointes en plastique des lacets prot\u00e8gent les extr\u00e9mit\u00e9s de l&rsquo;effilochage. Au cours de nombreuses divisions cellulaires, au cours desquelles l&rsquo;ADN entier d&rsquo;une cellule est copi\u00e9, les t\u00e9lom\u00e8res se raccourcissent progressivement jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 ce que l&rsquo;ADN soit endommag\u00e9 et que les cellules finissent par mourir. On estime que jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 80% de la longueur des t\u00e9lom\u00e8res d&rsquo;un individu est h\u00e9r\u00e9ditaire. Les t\u00e9lom\u00e8res courts ont \u00e9t\u00e9 associ\u00e9s \u00e0 un risque accru de plusieurs maladies li\u00e9es \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e2ge. La longueur des t\u00e9lom\u00e8res a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 li\u00e9e au cancer, mais la directionnalit\u00e9 des effets de cette association est moins claire. Cette \u00e9tude a examin\u00e9 les donn\u00e9es g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques de pr\u00e8s de 50 000 individus d&rsquo;origine europ\u00e9enne et identifi\u00e9 7 r\u00e9gions g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques associ\u00e9es \u00e0 la longueur des t\u00e9lom\u00e8res, dont 5 sont nouvelles. La variation g\u00e9n\u00e9tique dans ces r\u00e9gions explique collectivement plus de 1% de la variance de la longueur des t\u00e9lom\u00e8res.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>LE SAVIEZ-VOUS?<\/strong> Alors que nos t\u00e9lom\u00e8res raccourcissent naturellement tout au long de notre vie, certains choix de style de vie sont connus pour acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer ce processus!
