Alguns alimentos, como frutas, cont\u00eam a\u00e7\u00facares naturais. Por outro lado, os a\u00e7\u00facares tamb\u00e9m s\u00e3o comumente adicionados a alimentos como doces e refrigerantes. O americano m\u00e9dio consome 22 colheres de ch\u00e1 (88 gramas) de a\u00e7\u00facar adicionado por dia, enquanto os nutricionistas n\u00e3o recomendam mais do que 9 colheres de ch\u00e1 (36 gramas) por dia. Muito a\u00e7\u00facar na dieta pode aumentar o risco de diabetes, c\u00e1ries e outras doen\u00e7as. Para identificar variantes gen\u00e9ticas que podem afetar a quantidade de a\u00e7\u00facar que um indiv\u00edduo consome, este estudo examinou os genomas de mais de 260.000 indiv\u00edduos de ascend\u00eancia europeia. O estudo encontrou 10 variantes gen\u00e9ticas associadas ao consumo de a\u00e7\u00facar. Algumas dessas variantes tamb\u00e9m foram associadas aos n\u00edveis de consumo de outros macronutrientes, como gorduras e prote\u00ednas. Curiosamente, o estudo descobriu que o aumento do consumo de a\u00e7\u00facar foi correlacionado com uma diminui\u00e7\u00e3o na circunfer\u00eancia da cintura e um aumento na atividade f\u00edsica.
