A sua concentra\u00e7\u00e3o no sangue \u00e9 controlada pela hormona insulina produzida no p\u00e2ncreas. A insulina promove a ingest\u00e3o de a\u00e7\u00facar no sangue pelas c\u00e9lulas do corpo, o que reduz a sua concentra\u00e7\u00e3o no sangue. O diabetes tipo 2 ocorre quando as c\u00e9lulas n\u00e3o respondem \u00e0 insulina e \/ ou o p\u00e2ncreas n\u00e3o produz insulina suficiente. Isso resulta em aumento da concentra\u00e7\u00e3o de glicose no sangue, que danifica \u00f3rg\u00e3os, nervos e vasos sangu\u00edneos. A maioria dos estudos anteriores examinou a predisposi\u00e7\u00e3o gen\u00e9tica para a condi\u00e7\u00e3o em popula\u00e7\u00f5es europeias, potencialmente perdendo muitas variantes gen\u00e9ticas que s\u00e3o menos comuns em indiv\u00edduos de ascend\u00eancia europeia. Assim, este estudo analisou o diabetes tipo 2 em pessoas com ancestrais do Leste Asi\u00e1tico: 77.418 indiv\u00edduos com a doen\u00e7a e 356.122 controles saud\u00e1veis. O estudo identificou 301 variantes gen\u00e9ticas em 183 localiza\u00e7\u00f5es gen\u00f4micas, das quais 61 s\u00e3o novas.
