O sangue que foi enriquecido com oxig\u00eanio nos pulm\u00f5es entra no \u00e1trio esquerdo e flui para o ventr\u00edculo esquerdo, de onde \u00e9 bombeado para todas as outras partes do corpo. Quando o ventr\u00edculo esquerdo se contrai, nem todo o sangue \u00e9 ejetado e parte permanece dentro do ventr\u00edculo. A fra\u00e7\u00e3o de eje\u00e7\u00e3o do ventr\u00edculo esquerdo (FEVE) \u00e9 calculada dividindo-se o volume de sangue que sai do ventr\u00edculo esquerdo quando os m\u00fasculos do cora\u00e7\u00e3o se contraem pelo volume de sangue que permanece dentro do ventr\u00edculo esquerdo. A fra\u00e7\u00e3o de eje\u00e7\u00e3o ventricular esquerda normal (FEVE) varia de 55% a 70%. Para identificar as variantes gen\u00e9ticas associadas \u00e0 LVEF, este estudo de associa\u00e7\u00e3o do genoma examinou mais de 36.000 indiv\u00edduos de ascend\u00eancia europeia. O estudo identificou 22 variantes gen\u00e9ticas, incluindo variantes pr\u00f3ximas aos genes respons\u00e1veis pela flexibilidade do m\u00fasculo card\u00edaco (TTN) e genes associados ao sistema imunol\u00f3gico. Juntas, essas variantes explicam ~ 31% da herdabilidade da LVEF. O estudo tamb\u00e9m descobriu que um alto escore polig\u00eanico para FEVE estava fortemente correlacionado com o risco de cardiomiopatia dilatada.
