Os humanos t\u00eam cerca de 350 genes de receptores olfativos e cada um pode detectar uma s\u00e9rie de compostos de odor diferentes que, juntos, podem criar um grande n\u00famero de cheiros diferentes. No entanto, quando apresentados com o mesmo cheiro, indiv\u00edduos diferentes podem perceber a intensidade do cheiro de forma diferente. Este estudo de associa\u00e7\u00e3o do genoma analisou os genomas de mais de 11.000 islandeses para identificar as diferen\u00e7as gen\u00e9ticas subjacentes na percep\u00e7\u00e3o do cheiro dos peixes. Os pesquisadores descobriram uma variante, localizada em um gene conhecido como TAAR5, que est\u00e1 associada \u00e0 intensidade com que as pessoas percebem o cheiro de peixe. Curiosamente, o gene TAAR5 codifica um receptor olfativo que foi encontrado para ser ativado por mol\u00e9culas de odor presentes em salm\u00e3o podre, mas n\u00e3o fresco. Isso sugere que o receptor TAAR5 pode ter um papel no desencorajamento da ingest\u00e3o de bact\u00e9rias presentes em peixes estragados e outros alimentos.
