Ele desempenha um papel cr\u00edtico no controle do metabolismo do corpo, regulando a rapidez com que queimamos calorias e muitas outras coisas. A pr\u00f3pria tireoide \u00e9 controlada pela gl\u00e2ndula pituit\u00e1ria, localizada no c\u00e9rebro, e libera o horm\u00f4nio estimulador da tireoide (TSH) que estimula a tireoide a entrar em a\u00e7\u00e3o. Os n\u00edveis de TSH s\u00e3o comumente usados para diagnosticar uma variedade de dist\u00farbios da tireoide, incluindo hipotireoidismo, hipertireoidismo e c\u00e2ncer de tireoide. Este estudo de associa\u00e7\u00e3o do genoma examinou cerca de 120.000 indiv\u00edduos de ascend\u00eancia europeia para entender melhor como a gen\u00e9tica pode influenciar os n\u00edveis de TSH. O estudo identificou 74 regi\u00f5es no genoma que parecem se associar aos n\u00edveis de TSH, 28 das quais foram descobertas recentemente. Uma das regi\u00f5es abriga o gene TSHR, que atua como receptor do horm\u00f4nio estimulador da tireoide.
