Os sintomas t\u00edpicos s\u00e3o calafrios, febre alta e, em casos graves, fal\u00eancia de \u00f3rg\u00e3os. A Organiza\u00e7\u00e3o Mundial da Sa\u00fade estimou 219 milh\u00f5es de casos de mal\u00e1ria em 2017, com o n\u00famero estimado de mortes totalizando 435.000. Este estudo buscou identificar regi\u00f5es gen\u00f4micas associadas \u00e0 resist\u00eancia \u00e0 mal\u00e1ria grave. Usando DNA de mais de 17.000 indiv\u00edduos da \u00c1frica, \u00c1sia e Oceania, os pesquisadores identificaram 5 variantes gen\u00e9ticas. Coletivamente, essas variantes explicam cerca de 10% da herdabilidade da resist\u00eancia \u00e0 mal\u00e1ria grave. Uma das variantes gen\u00e9ticas identificadas est\u00e1 localizada no gene ATP2B4, que parece desempenhar um papel na infec\u00e7\u00e3o de gl\u00f3bulos vermelhos com parasitas da mal\u00e1ria.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>VOC\u00ca SABIA?<\/strong> A doen\u00e7a falciforme \u00e9 uma doen\u00e7a heredit\u00e1ria do sangue que se caracteriza por gl\u00f3bulos vermelhos que podem assumir a forma de uma foice.
