A insulina, um horm\u00f4nio produzido pelo p\u00e2ncreas, ajuda as c\u00e9lulas do corpo a absorver a glicose do sangue e a utiliz\u00e1-la como fonte de energia. O diabetes tipo 2 (T2D) ocorre quando o p\u00e2ncreas n\u00e3o produz insulina suficiente ou as c\u00e9lulas do corpo n\u00e3o respondem \u00e0 insulina. Isso resulta em n\u00edveis elevados de a\u00e7\u00facar no sangue que podem causar danos aos nervos, vasos sangu\u00edneos, rins e outros \u00f3rg\u00e3os. Embora os fatores ambientais, em particular a dieta, sejam fatores de risco para T2D, uma suscetibilidade tamb\u00e9m pode ser herdada. Este estudo multi\u00e9tnico do genoma de mais de 71.000 indiv\u00edduos identificou um novo locus associado ao risco de desenvolver T2D, elevando o n\u00famero total de loci conhecidos para 10. A nova variante est\u00e1 perto do<a href=\"https:\/\/nebula.org\/blog\/pt-br\/apolipoproteina-e-apoe\/\"> APOE<\/a> gene, que ajuda a transportar gorduras no sangue. APOE foi anteriormente associada a v\u00e1rios outros dist\u00farbios, incluindo a doen\u00e7a de Alzheimer.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>VOC\u00ca SABIA?<\/strong> Estima-se que 80% de todos os casos de diabetes tipo 2 podem ser evitados com a ado\u00e7\u00e3o de um estilo de vida mais saud\u00e1vel.
