A sepse pode ser fatal e causar danos a longo prazo em muitos \u00f3rg\u00e3os. Se os pulm\u00f5es forem afetados, isso pode resultar na s\u00edndrome da ang\u00fastia respirat\u00f3ria aguda (SDRA), em que os fluidos entram nos pulm\u00f5es, tornando extremamente dif\u00edcil respirar. Os indiv\u00edduos que sobrevivem \u00e0 SDRA geralmente apresentam comprometimento cognitivo e f\u00edsico permanente, causado por danos aos \u00f3rg\u00e3os devido ao suprimento insuficiente de oxig\u00eanio. Este estudo de todo o genoma examinou quase 2.000 indiv\u00edduos de ascend\u00eancia europeia para entender melhor a predisposi\u00e7\u00e3o gen\u00e9tica para o desenvolvimento de SDRA em pacientes com sepse. O estudo descobriu uma variante no gene FTL1.
