Ela se desenvolve quando o nervo \u00f3ptico que conecta o olho ao c\u00e9rebro \u00e9 danificado, geralmente como resultado do aumento da press\u00e3o dentro do olho. Um m\u00e9todo para interromper a progress\u00e3o do glaucoma \u00e9 diminuir essa press\u00e3o. Este estudo de associa\u00e7\u00e3o do genoma de mais de 130.000 participantes de ascend\u00eancia europeia identificou 24 variantes gen\u00e9ticas associadas ao aumento da press\u00e3o intraocular e ao risco de desenvolver essa condi\u00e7\u00e3o. Duas das variantes est\u00e3o localizadas perto de genes que desempenham um papel no desenvolvimento e fun\u00e7\u00e3o do nervo \u00f3ptico (CDKN2B e SEIS6).<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>VOC\u00ca SABIA?<\/strong> Embora o dano dessa condi\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o possa ser revertido, a detec\u00e7\u00e3o precoce pode ajudar a retardar a progress\u00e3o da perda de vis\u00e3o. Exames oculares regulares podem detectar o aumento da press\u00e3o intraocular antes que a vis\u00e3o seja prejudicada.
