Ele pode ser avaliado medindo v\u00e1rios par\u00e2metros. Um par\u00e2metro da fun\u00e7\u00e3o pulmonar \u00e9 o volume m\u00e1ximo de ar que pode ser expirado ap\u00f3s uma respira\u00e7\u00e3o profunda, tamb\u00e9m conhecido como capacidade vital for\u00e7ada (CVF). Outro par\u00e2metro \u00e9 o volume de ar que pode ser expirado no primeiro segundo da expira\u00e7\u00e3o, conhecido como volume expirat\u00f3rio for\u00e7ado em 1 segundo (VEF1). Uma rela\u00e7\u00e3o VEF1 \/ CVF baixa \u00e9 um indicador de doen\u00e7a pulmonar obstrutiva cr\u00f4nica (DPOC). Este estudo de associa\u00e7\u00e3o do genoma examinou mais de 400.000 indiv\u00edduos de ascend\u00eancia europeia e identificou 155 variantes gen\u00e9ticas associadas \u00e0 raz\u00e3o FEV1 \/ FVC.
