Normalmente, o \u00e1cido \u00farico viaja pelo sangue at\u00e9 ser filtrado pelos rins, sendo excretado na urina. Quando o corpo n\u00e3o processa o \u00e1cido \u00farico com efici\u00eancia, ele pode se acumular nas articula\u00e7\u00f5es e nos rins, causando gota e pedras nos rins. O risco de ac\u00famulo de \u00e1cido \u00farico em uma pessoa \u00e9 conhecido como heredit\u00e1rio, mas poucos loci gen\u00e9ticos foram encontrados. Este estudo de associa\u00e7\u00e3o do genoma examinou mais de 450.000 indiv\u00edduos de ascend\u00eancia afro-americana, oriental, europeia, hisp\u00e2nica e do sul da \u00c1sia. Ele identificou 183 regi\u00f5es gen\u00e9ticas, das quais 147 s\u00e3o novas, que est\u00e3o correlacionadas com um risco aumentado de gota. Essas variantes explicam coletivamente uma estimativa de 8% da herdabilidade na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de \u00e1cido \u00farico.
