Sua preval\u00eancia est\u00e1 aumentando em todo o mundo. Embora os estudos de associa\u00e7\u00e3o de todo o genoma tenham identificado ~ 1.000 variantes gen\u00e9ticas associadas ao \u00edndice de massa corporal (IMC), que \u00e9 um substituto da obesidade, essas variantes gen\u00e9ticas explicam apenas ~ 6% da herdabilidade do IMC. Neste estudo, os pesquisadores examinaram genomas de mais de 4.600 groenlandeses.
