A fun\u00e7\u00e3o das c\u00e9lulas gliais \u00e9 proteger e apoiar o sistema nervoso. Os gliomas s\u00e3o uma forma de c\u00e2ncer que resulta do crescimento descontrolado das c\u00e9lulas gliais. Para identificar as variantes de risco para esta doen\u00e7a, este estudo examinou a informa\u00e7\u00e3o gen\u00e9tica de mais de 11.000 indiv\u00edduos de ascend\u00eancia da Europa Ocidental. Cinco variantes associadas a este tipo de c\u00e2ncer foram descobertas. As variantes foram ligadas a genes que desempenham um papel na manuten\u00e7\u00e3o da estabilidade gen\u00f4mica.
