Durante aquele ano, mais de 8.000 infec\u00e7\u00f5es em 26 pa\u00edses foram relatadas. Os sintomas da SARS s\u00e3o semelhantes aos da gripe e incluem febre e tosse seca. Casos graves s\u00e3o comuns e resultam em uma taxa de mortalidade de aproximadamente 10%. Este estudo examinou os dados gen\u00e9ticos de quase 1000 indiv\u00edduos de ascend\u00eancia chinesa que foram diagnosticados com SARS. O estudo identificou 2 variantes que est\u00e3o associadas \u00e0 suscetibilidade \u00e0 infec\u00e7\u00e3o com o SARS<em> coronav\u00edrus<\/em> . Uma variante est\u00e1 no gene CCL2, que desempenha um papel na atra\u00e7\u00e3o<em> macr\u00f3fagos<\/em> a um local de infec\u00e7\u00e3o. A outra variante est\u00e1 no gene MBL, que ajuda o sistema imunol\u00f3gico a reconhecer padr\u00f5es moleculares comumente encontrados na superf\u00edcie de muitos v\u00edrus e bact\u00e9rias.
