{"id":1447,"date":"2020-03-29T08:57:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-29T12:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nebula.org\/blog\/?p=1447"},"modified":"2021-01-27T01:56:12","modified_gmt":"2021-01-27T06:56:12","slug":"genetics-of-sars-coronavirus-infection-ching-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nebula.org\/blog\/genetics-of-sars-coronavirus-infection-ching-2010\/","title":{"rendered":"SARS coronavirus infection (Ching, 2010)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>STUDY TITLE: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jid\/article\/201\/12\/1899\/797813\">Significance of the Myxovirus Resistance A (MxA) Gene \u2014 123C&gt;A Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism in Suppressed Interferon \u03b2 Induction of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Infection<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SUMMARY:<\/strong> Identification of a genetic variant associated with a decreased risk of SARS&nbsp;<em>coronavirus<\/em>&nbsp;infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OVERVIEW: <\/strong>The severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)&nbsp;<em>coronavirus<\/em>&nbsp;emerged in 2003 in China. In little over a year, it infected 8000 people and caused over 900 deaths across the world. Typical symptoms include high fever, headache, and a dry cough. Previous studies have shown that&nbsp;<em>interferons<\/em>&nbsp;can inhibit the replication of the SARS&nbsp;<em>coronavirus<\/em>&nbsp;by inducing production of antiviral proteins like MxA.&nbsp;This study demonstrated that a genetic variant (rs17000900) near the MxA gene influences its activity when cells are exposed to&nbsp;<em>interferons<\/em>. The study also examined the genetic information of over 1200 individuals of Chinese descent and established a relationship between this genetic variant and risk of SARS&nbsp;<em>coronavirus<\/em>&nbsp;infection. The results suggest that the A allele of the rs17000900 variant is linked to a decreased susceptibility to SARS&nbsp;<em>coronavirus<\/em>&nbsp;infection. (Note: This study is not a genome-wide association study.
