{"id":952,"date":"2019-12-22T16:13:52","date_gmt":"2019-12-22T21:13:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nebula.org\/blog\/?p=952"},"modified":"2020-12-28T19:09:58","modified_gmt":"2020-12-29T00:09:58","slug":"population-genomics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nebula.org\/blog\/population-genomics\/","title":{"rendered":"From one to millions &#8211; the age of population genomics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than 15 years ago, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genome.gov\/human-genome-project\/What\">Human Genome Project<\/a> produced a single human genome at a cost of over $3 billion. Since then, exponentially decreasing costs have enabled researchers to sequence the genomes of hundreds of thousands of people. Today, national governments across the globe are initiating large scale population genomics projects to gain insights that might help improve healthcare.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the United States, the National Institute of Health\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/allofus.nih.gov\/\">All Of Us Research Program<\/a> is collecting data on at least one million Americans to build a unique database for precision medicine and genomics research. Across the pond, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukbiobank.ac.uk\/\">UK BioBank<\/a> recruited 500,000 people to study serious diseases combining medical records, imaging data, and genetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<br>Dozens of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20190821005346\/en\/Population-Genomics-Study-2019-National-Strategy-Implementation\">other examples<\/a> exist on a variety of scales, including Finland\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finngen.fi\/en\">FinnGen study<\/a>, the GenomeAsia 100K <a href=\"https:\/\/genomeasia100k.org\/\">consortium<\/a> that focuses on precision medicine in the Asian population, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/initiatives-and-programs\/genomics-health-futures-mission\">Genomics Health Futures Mission<\/a> investment into Australian genomics research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-exceeding-expectations\"> Exceeding expectations <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The value of these initiatives is proving to be extraordinary. Researchers have already achieved much using the UK Biobank \u2013&nbsp;the number of scientific publications utilizing the resource is rapidly increasing year after year (Figure 1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"368\" src=\"https:\/\/nebula.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/PopulationGenomicsBlogPic-1024x368.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-953\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nebula.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/PopulationGenomicsBlogPic-1024x368.png 1024w, https:\/\/nebula.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/PopulationGenomicsBlogPic-300x108.png 300w, https:\/\/nebula.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/PopulationGenomicsBlogPic-768x276.png 768w, https:\/\/nebula.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/PopulationGenomicsBlogPic.png 924w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption> <br>Figure 1. The number of publications per year that have used the UK Biobank resource as of June 2019. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, earlier this year researchers using data from the UK Biobank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukbiobank.ac.uk\/2019\/07\/healthy-lifestyle-may-offset-genetic-risk-of-dementia\/\">demonstrated an association between a healthy lifestyle and a lower risk of dementia<\/a> \u2013 insight that might be used to combat the growing incidence of dementia in our aging society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the myriad population genomics and sequencing projects underway worldwide, the UK Biobank is only the tip of the iceberg. Decreasing costs and improved technology are driving genomics research, enabling a better understanding of diseases and increasingly enabling prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-best-of-both-worlds\"> The best of both worlds <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The above breakdown naively considers only government initiatives \u2013 direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.23andme.com\/\">23andMe<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.com\/dna\/\">AncestryDNA<\/a> have much larger databases than any existing research project. And at the time of writing, these figures are staggering \u2013 AncestryDNA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.com\/corporate\/about-ancestry\/company-facts\">claims<\/a> to have DNA-tested over 15 million people, while 23andMe <a href=\"https:\/\/mediacenter.23andme.com\/company\/about-us\/\">cites<\/a> over 10 million customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Government projects come with major expenses \u2013 complicated administrative operations, expensive processes, and general inefficiency. Direct to consumer genetic testing cuts through much of this by providing easy, affordable access to genetic testing technologies which enables rapidly growing databases of genetic information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Nebula Genomics we seek to combine the best aspects of government-sponsored population genomic initiatives with the advantages of direct-to-consumer genetic testing. In contrast to most personal genomics companies, we do not seek to monetize our customers\u2019 data.
