Introduction
Orivet offers a wide range of DNA tests to assist pet owners, breeders, and veterinarians with genetic profiling. These tests are for purebred animals.
Pet owners have three genetic testing options that range from simple breed identification to a full breed profile. On the other hand, breeders have much more specific options. They choose their genetic test based on the breed and can test for diseases, traits, health and ancestry, or the full breed profile.
There are also options for veterinarians who wish to use genetic screening to implement personalized medicine into their practice.
With their expertise in DNA testing, Orivet genetic pet care strives to provide owners, breeders, and veterinarians with valuable insights into a pet’s breed composition, ancestry, and genetic health. Orivet empowers pet owners with a deeper understanding of their pets’ personalized heritage and genetic makeup contributing to the overall well-being and care.
Orvit offers its tests worldwide and has offices in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.
The company notes that it has worked with breeders and veterinarians for over 15 years. The pet owner line of products appears to be a newer addition to their services.
The Science Behind Orivet
Orivet employs cutting-edge scientific techniques and advanced genetic analysis to sequence an animal’s DNA. Just like human DNA sequencing, Orivet uses genetic blueprints to provide invaluable insights into breed identification, genetic health risks, and ancestral lineage.
By studying specific genetic markers, Orivet’s scientific team can accurately determine a pet’s breed composition, identify the presence of traits associated with pure breeds and provide a comprehensive understanding of the pet’s genetic heritage. This in-depth genetic analysis empowers pet owners, breeders, and veterinarians to make informed decisions about their animals’ health, breeding strategies, and overall care.
Review of Orivet Products
Orivet offers genetic tests for breed identification, health risks, and traits. All its tests provide breed-specific tests for a wide range of dog and cat breeds.
Pet owners
There are three tests available for pet owners: GenoPet, and GenoPet+, and the DNA test. All three provide Orivet dog DNA tests while the DNA test also has a cat option.
The GenoPet and GenoPet+ options can be used with any dog type, including mixed breeds.
GenoPet is a breed ID DNA test. This product screens for over 350 breeds, types, and varieties of canines. The report includes the percentage of each breed present in the dog.
GenoPet+ includes both the breed identification and a health test. The genetic health screening includes over 250 diseases and traits.
The Orivet DNA Test is for purebred dogs or cats and includes the full breed profile. Although marketed for pet owners it is most useful for breeders unless pet owners know they have a purebred dog.
To order a test, customers must choose their dog breed. Then, the lab will only test for the diseases and traits scientifically validated and published for the selected breed. This product helps dog owners know which health problems to look out for and create a preventative medicine plan.
The breeds included in this test tend to be the most popular and include Australian Shepherds, French Bulldogs, Miniature American Shepherds, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and Border Collies.
Breeders
Breeders can perform a full breed profile on their animal by selecting the type of breed from the options menu. There are hundreds of specific dog and cat breeds to choose from. These tests include results on breed-specific diseases and traits and also includes a DNA profile.
The full breed profile includes over 220 genetic tests for dogs and over 40 for cats.
This profiling uses 288 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to generate a unique DNA profile for each animal. The DNA profile is used to verify the animal’s identity and determine parentage, ensuring accurate breeding records, stud services, and confirming dual sire litters. This is not a breed identification test.
For a reduced price, customers can choose to do the diseases, traits, or health tests alone.
Orvit offers additional perks for breeders including a loyalty points program, collection agencies, sample tracker, and microchip checker.
Veterinarians
Veterinarians can create an account and learn how to incorporate genetics into their practices. Orvit’s proprietary algorithm helps them create personalized life plans, including a health risk analysis that identifies the most clinically relevant diseases for each pet along with specific screening suggestions.
