Introduction

Genomapp is a DNA analysis app for iOS and Android that provides insightful reports on health and traits. It does not offer DNA sequencing.

Its pricing is reasonable, and its additional features, such as a blog on genomics and personalized medicine, make it a valuable resource for those interested in learning more about their DNA.

The company’s app evaluates genetic mutations associated with various conditions in its database of over 9500 conditions. Also included in this database of conditions: 12400 genes and 183700 markers Genomapp also claims its database is constructed from scientific official sources including those for serious conditions such as breast cancer.

RF Developments launched Genomapp in 2015 to promote public interest in genomics. The company combines knowledge from various fields, including genome bioinformatics and computational biology, technology and computer sciences, and UX/UI design.

The company is based in Spain, with headquarters in Madrid and subsidiaries in Barcelona. Genomapp offers the ability to analyze raw DNA data and provides reports and pricing information on its website.

Users can access a demo mode on the app before paying for any of its services.

The website clarifies that this service does not provide medical advice and that users should consult with their doctor before making any changes based on the genetic information provided.

DNA app stores often have a relatively few traits and health conditions sold in separate reports. Nebula offers affordable Whole Genome Sequencing to decode 100% of your DNA! This enables the most comprehensive and accurate reporting for health and ancestry. Click here to learn more!

The Science behind Genomapp

The Genomapp app analyzes raw DNA data to identify variations in DNA sequences that may be associated with certain health conditions or traits.

It uses algorithms and statistical models to analyze large genomic data sets and provide insights into a person’s genetic makeup. This involves comparing an individual’s DNA data with reference genomes and databases of known genetic variations.

Genomapp’s approach is based on the latest advances in genomic research and personalized medicine, which aim to use genetic information to develop more targeted and effective treatments for various health conditions. By analyzing a person’s DNA, the app can identify potential genetic risk factors for diseases and help users make more informed decisions about their health and wellness.

Review of Genomapp’s Products

Genomapp’s single product is their app, which is free to download. After uploading raw data obtained from a commercial testing company, the app analyzes the DNA file to obtain the following reports:

  • Traits
  • Observable Signs
  • Blood Groups
  • Inherited conditions
  • Complex diseases
  • Pharmacological response

Genomapp generates these reports by crossing the raw data submitted with its database. If a condition or trait is not listed this means that either the marker is not in the raw data or the item is not in the database.

Review of Genomapp Data Upload

The app is compatible with genetic raw data files from 23andMe, AncestryDNA, FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA), MyHeritage, Vitagene, LivingDNA, Tellmegen, and Genes for Good.

In addition to these mentioned companies, Genomapp supports raw data files with a specified scheme like VCF. Unfortunately, VCF raw data files from WES/WGS are not compatible with Genomapp.

Since Nebula uses whole genome sequencing, you will get the most complete results from DNA upload companies like Genomapp.

Review of Using Genomapp

Before using Genomapp customers must have their DNA sequenced through one of the DTC genetic testing companies and be able to download the raw data.

Then, customers get the app through either the Apple Store or Google Play. There is no cost to download the app.

Customers download their raw DNA data and share it with Genomapp from email, computer, or cloud. The app analyzes the data in just a few minutes and customers receive their reports almost instantly.

Review of Genomapp Cost

There are three reports free of charge: Traits, Observable Signs, and Blood Groups.

Inherited conditions, Complex diseases, and Pharmacological response reports cost $15.

If downloading multiple files customers receive a discount to $10. In addition, the ability to download results as a PDF costs an extra $1.

Review of a Genomapp Report

The Genomapp reports cover a range of topics based on over 9500 items in the company’s database. Customers will see different variants depending on the type of report selected.

Free reports

Traits: Specific characteristics of an organism hair color muscle performance. These are determined by genes, the environment, or interactions between them.

The Genomapp report covers items such as lactose intolerance, muscle performance, earwax type, eye color, bitter taste perception, and many more.

Observable signs: Observable physical symptoms associated with diseases that may assist in a doctor’s diagnosis. You should always attend a consult with unhealthy processes or diseases.

Blood groups: Your genetic markers associated with blood groups. These describe the antigens coded for by genes. This information is important for things such as blood transfusions, pregnancy, and transplants. Some blood types are also associated with disease development.

This report also includes a Blood Type Calculator.

Complex diseases

Genomapp’s report on complex conditions analyzes an individual’s genetic predisposition to develop certain common and rare diseases. The database covers genetic markers associated with over 7000 conditions, including autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and neurological conditions.

The first page of the report provides a summary of your probability of developing conditions included in the report. They are divided into lower than average, normal, and higher than average risk.

By selecting on one of these categories users can bring up a list of the conditions that fell in that section. Users can select a condition from the list or use the search function to look for a specific item of interest.

Once selected, the app will provide an overview of the condition, including whether the variant found is protective, the related genes, and the rsID, which will provide additional information.

It’s important to realize that most genetic conditions are a combination of genes and environmental factors. Understanding your risk helps you to understand and take proactive steps to mitigate it.

Examples of diseases covered in this report include breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s

Inherited conditions

This report provides information about a user’s risk of passing on a genetic condition caused by a single gene to their offspring. Although relatively rare they affect millions of people worldwide. This report gives a parent or potential patient information on their offspring possibilities of being affected.

Pharmacological response

This report offers insights into how a user’s body may respond to specific drugs based on their genetic makeup. Pharmacological response based on your genetic information can be helpful for users who may be taking medication or who are considering taking medication.

Medications are divided into four categories: poor, intermediate, extensive, or ultra-extensive metabolizer. Generally, poor and intermediate metabolizers need a lower dose while ultra-extensive metabolizers need a higher dose than average.

Review of Genomapp’s Privacy Policy

Genomapp does not have stored or uploaded DNA files on its servers.

The policy also explains how Genomapp collects and uses data, such as device and location information, to provide, to analyze and improve its services. It keeps data only as long as necessary to provide the service or until the user deletes the account.

The company does not rent or sell user data. It will only share it with service providers who support the business, such as for customer service and payments.

Other Genomapp Reviews

Genomapp has received varying ratings across different platforms. On Google Play, the app has an average rating of 4.5 stars based on over 700 reviews. Most people felt the app was easy to use and provided interesting and helpful information. Some critiques mentioned technical and payment issues as well as some confusing reports.

On the Apple App Store, the app has an average rating of 4.6 stars based on over 600 customer reviews. Most reviewers on this platform like the information and the regular updates. They also liked being able to access information on their device and easy to understand manner of the reports. Although it seems there has not been an update for a while the company responded to one user comment that it is working on an updated version of the app as of May 2023.
However, DNAtestingchoice’s rating is 3.5 stars. The editor’s review from 2917 felt that the reports were complex and they had to do their own research. A customer review wanted information on more common conditions.

Nebula Genomics

Genomapp is an app that provides additional analysis of previously acquired DNA data. To get the most out of a raw data upload service like Genomapp, you will want the most comprehensive genetic information. Although the best way to get this is through whole genome sequencing, a product offered by Nebula Genomics, it should be noted that these files are not supported by Genomapp at this time.

Nebula believes that the latest genetic technology offers the best advantage to users looking to improve their health. That’s why Nebula offers a comprehensive test highlighting variants related to diet, fitness, disease, and much more. With 30x Whole-Genome Sequencing, Nebula sequences 100% of your DNA to get to the root cause of every biological inclination.
